Grammar and the conversational tone
by Steve Niles

As you will have seen in other areas of this resource, articles appearing in ZATZ publications should be written in a warm, friendly manner, as if you were having a conversation with the reader. Articles should connect with the reader so that eventually, they almost feel they know the regular contributors personally.

Bearing this in mind, many writers have adopted what is called a conversational tone. They write the same way they would talk, as if they were explaining the subject in question to they guy on the next barstool. This can be quite effective, but unfortunately, it can be taken too far.

When we talk, we pay very little attention to grammar. However, when we write, it becomes very important to adhere to grammatical rules in order to be understood. Contrary to popular belief, grammar was not invented by overbearing school marms in order to punish unruly children. The rules were established because, when used, they make your writing smooth, polished, and coherent. The most brilliant idea ever conceived can look like the jabbering of a fool if jumbled by unstructured sentences and poor word-choice.

The important thing to remember is a light and casual tone does not mean throwing grammar out the window. A conversational style can be achieved while still following the basic rules of grammar. Here’s an example:

  • Not so good: “I really, really recommend this new computer application. It’s a lot of fun. And it improves performance too. It’s compatible with any system. Just like the GVX183 model (from the X company) that was released last year. You should get this application for yourself. Now.”

  • Better: “I highly recommend this new computer application. Not only is it fun to use, but it also improves performance. As with the GVX183 model released last year, this application is compatible with any system. You should get this application for yourself right away.”

The tone remains light and conversational, but in the second version, it flows more smoothly.
